With a fertile soil base and a plentiful growing season, Elgin County is located on some of the finest agricultural ground in Canada. The history of Elgin County is an agricultural one.

Agricultural is a key economic driver in Elgin; as there are are 7,753 jobs, 19.7% of the County's total, tied to agriculture in Elgin County and almost $558 million in sales from farms and businesses that buy from and sell to farms per annum.

The employment and sales expenditure multipliers indicate that for every on-farm job in Elgin County, there are an additional 0.85 jobs off the farm, and for each dollar in farm gate sales, there are an additional $1.13 sales in businesses that deal with farmers. The $262.5 million in farm gate sales produced another $295.5 million in Ag-related sales. Just over $216 million was spent locally on-farm expenses.
